The following questions are asked of us on a regular basis regarding the St. John High School Graduation Alliance Program

General Details

Q: Who can participate?
A: This is a program for students in grades 9 through 12. It’s designed for students who are not currently participating in the traditional school program. Students need to have finished 8th grade and must be younger than 21 on August 31 in order to participate. The District must approve each student’s participation.

Q: What will the diploma say?
A: The diploma will be authorized by St. John School District

Q: Will I need to be online at specific times?
A: No. All of the courses are self-paced, so you can work on them at the time of day that is best for you. Teachers hold live office hours, so that you can speak with them in real time, or contact Tutors 24 x 7 to get help right away.

Q: How long will it take me to earn my diploma?
A: You'll earn up to 6.0 credits per year. So, unless you take additional courses, it will take about the same amount of time to finish the Graduation Alliance Program as it would for you to finish a traditional high school program. It’s possible to finish more quickly by taking additional courses taking additional courses.

Q: How much time will I need to spend each week on my school work?
A: In general, we recommend that you plan to spend approximately 25 hours each week on your course work. You can move as quickly or as slowly as you need to really understand the material and complete the work. Some students will spend less than 25 hours per week, and some students will spend more than that in order to complete their monthly course requirement.

Q: How will I know what I need to do?
A: We will help you create a learning plan, and every course comes with a custom Pace Chart. Your Pace Chart will include due to help you pace yourself and finish on time. You must complete a certain number of courses each month to stay in the program.

Q: What kinds of courses are available?
A: The program offers a wide range of courses from core requirements to electives. Check out the course catalog for more details.

Q: Will there be additional materials for these courses?
A: While most of the course content is accessed online, some of the courses have additional materials, such as CDs for language courses, novels for English courses, etc. We will ship the materials directly to you or you can check them out from your local Advocate.

Q: How do I turn in my assignments?
A: Assignments are completed online or are submitted through an online drop box.

Q: How do I communicate with my teachers?
A: Teachers are available by email, phone, and on-line office hours. If you need an immediate answer to a question, you can also access our professional online tutors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 361 days of the year.

Q: We travel a lot. Will that be a problem?
A: No, it will not be a problem. Your progress is what is most important. As long as you can do the school work and meet your monthly requirements and show that progress is being made, it doesn’t matter where you work.

Q: Will I be able to participate in sports and other extra-curricular activities offered by the District?
A: Students who participate in the District’s Graduation Alliance Program will have the same rights, privileges, and responsibilities as other students in the District regarding participation on athletic teams and in extra-curricular activities as outlined in the District Handbook.

Q: Is the program really free?
A: Yes, there is no cost to you. The local school district provides the program to eligible students.

Technology

Q: Do I need a high-speed Internet connection?
A: You will need to have occasional access to a high-speed Internet connection to download courses and assignments and to turn in your work. If you don't have high-speed at home, you can work off-line and "sync up" once or twice a week from a hot spot like a coffee shop or library. If needed, your local Advocate will help you locate convenient Internet access locations.

Q: What kind of hardware do we need to access the online courses?
A: We provide laptops for most students to use while in the program. You are welcome to use your own computer if you prefer to do so.

Q: If the program provides the laptop, how do I get it?
A: Your local Advocate will contact you to make arrangements.

Q: Are we financially responsible for the laptop?
A: Parent(s)/Guardian(s) or students over 18 years of age are financially responsible for loss, damage, or theft of the laptop. You must sign a Financial Responsibility Form in order to receive a laptop.

Homeschool Questions

Q: We will still be classified as homeschoolers?
A: No, you will not. In order to participate in this program, you will need to enroll or re-enroll in the local public school district. However, you can still work from home, just as you always have.

Q: Can we still participate in homeschool activities, like field trips, etc?
A: That depends on the rules of your homeschool group. Because the classes don't have requirements for a specific time or place, you are very welcome to supplement your child's education as you see fit.
